Tuesdays
at Hamilton Hawks Clubrooms, Grantham
Street, Hamilton (by Boat Ramp)

The Hamilton Marathon
Clinic was founded in 1978 in response to a growing interest in
organised
running programmes. During the 'marathon boom' of the 1980s many people
completed marathons with the support of Clinic group running
programmes. The
Rotorua Marathon was a popular goal.
There are still a few
Hamilton Marathon Clinic members who regularly complete marathons
wearing the
distinctive green uniform, but the emphasis has changed. In the last
decade,
the Clinic has adapted to new life-styles. Our aim is to provide a
friendly and
supportive environment with a view to personal fitness and health
through
regular exercise.
We have found that
running or walking in groups twice a week provides a basis for most
people to
attain their goals. Most members run or walk three or four times a
week, the
recognised basis of a fitness programme.
The Hamilton Marathon
Clinic caters for all ages and abilities. We have a few runners and
walkers who
enter national and regional age-group championships, but most of us are
club
members, seeking to maintain basic fitness. Many members are in their
30s and
40s, but we have some well into their 70s.
We support the idea
of goal setting, and we encourage people to train for a specific event,
be it
5km or 42km. Most members know their 'personal bests', but
encouragement of
others is as much the focus of our participation.
We provide advice,
and there are a number of very experienced members in the Hamilton
Marathon
Clinic who can help with comments on shoes, safety, pace judgement and
technique. If you wish, the Hamilton Marathon Clinic will provide you
with a
training schedule to reach your fitness target.
The Hamilton Marathon
Clinic is a non-profit incorporated society, run by a committee of
members
elected annually at an AGM each April. The Clinic is affiliated to
Athletics
New Zealand. Membership is by annual subscription, and the benefits
include
access to the clubrooms (changing facilities, showers, toilets, full
kitchen,
TV/social area), free buses to some events, spot prizes at events
organised by
the Clinic and a great social environment.
We meet formally
twice a week. The Sunday morning meeting is at
Free 'trial'
membership for four weeks. Come and see if you like our 'style'.We
encourage
walkers to join Wilf Johnston to find a group walking at a suitable
pace for
them. Joggers and runners generally start as one pack and find a
running group
at the right pace over a few weeks.
We welcome new walkers or runners who are keen to build their fitness and health by walking/running any distance, from 5km to the marathon.
